What is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)?
Normally, it is used to help patients who suffer from sleep apnea. It also is used by doctors on infants who suffer from respiratory distress syndrome. Sometimes this condition is associated with infants born before the completion of the full term of pregnancy as their lungs are not fully developed at the time of birth.
It is possible to create continuous airway pressure by providing respiratory support with a nasal cannula. In this case humidified respiratory air is provided at a low pressure to into the cannula. A CPAP machine could be used for this purpose.
